ILLINOIS — A plant-based butter product distributed in Illinois and nine other states has been recalled over concerns about possible contamination with E. coli, yeast and mold, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The recall involves 1,304 cases of Miyoko's Creamery European Style Salted Plant Milk Butter, distributed by Idaho-based Prosperity Organic Foods Inc. In Illinois, the butter is sold at Jewel, Whole Foods and Meijer stores, according to the Miyoko's website.
The company initiated the voluntary recall on Sept. 11, and the FDA classified it as a Class II recall on Oct. 23, according to federal recall records.
Recalled butter was sold in Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Iowa, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey and New Hampshire, according to the FDA. The affected product was sold in 8-ounce packages and can be identified by the following information:
The recall covers 1,304 cases, with six individual packages per case, amounting to 7,824 packages of butter. According to the FDA, the recall was issued because of potential contamination involving yeast, mold and E. coli.
The agency classified the recall as Class II, meaning consumption of or exposure to the affected product could cause temporary or medically reversible health problems, while the likelihood of serious adverse health consequences is considered remote. The federal recall information identifies Illinois among the states where the butter was distributed but does not specify which Illinois grocery stores received the affected products.
Consumers who purchased the recalled butter should not eat it. They can discard the product or contact the retailer where it was purchased about returning it for a possible refund.
The FDA's recall database provides additional details about the affected product, including its identifying codes and distribution information.
