Gov. JB Pritzker will temporarily step away from public appearances next week to undergo a medical procedure, his office announced Friday, just days after he won reelection to a third term.
Pritzker, 61, is scheduled to undergo an outpatient urology procedure Monday as a planned follow-up to a procedure he had done in May, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
"This is the standard and final follow-up to the same procedure he completed in May 2026," spokesperson Matt Hill said in a statement provided to reporters Friday, according to the Sun-Times.
The governor is expected to pause public events for about 10 days while recovering but will continue performing his official duties, the Chicago Tribune reported.
"The governor will continue fulfilling his duties and pause public events while recovering," Hill said, according to the Sun-Times. "The governor is grateful for well-wishes and looks forward to resuming public events soon."
Hill told the Tribune that the condition being treated is not cancerous and that Pritzker's overall health has not changed since May. The governor's office has not publicly disclosed the specific procedure.
Pritzker underwent an initial outpatient urology procedure in early May. About two weeks later, he sought treatment at a Springfield hospital after experiencing what his office described as a minor complication, according to NBC Chicago.
NBC Chicago reported that he was treated and released without being admitted to the hospital. His office did not disclose the nature of the complication.
The announcement comes days after Pritzker defeated Republican Darren Bailey in Tuesday's gubernatorial election, securing a third term in office.
A specific date for his return to public appearances has not been announced.
