Body Found In Storage Unit Was Illinois Police Chief: Authorities
The unit's owner told deputies a suspicious odor was from a dead opossum, but later admitted it was a body, police said.
MAQUON, IL — A body found in a storage unit in rural Illinois has been identified as the village’s former police chief, according to authorities.
Months after the remains were discovered, police officially confirmed Tuesday that the deceased was 71-year-old Richard R. Young, of Maquon.
Young’s death was uncovered Oct. 7, when Knox County deputies responded to a storage facility on East Third Street in Maquon for a suspicious smell in a unit, police said. The unit’s owner told the deputies the odor was from a dead opossum, but when the owner was asked to open a large box in the unit, she admitted it contained a dead body, according to authorities.

The remains were decomposed to the extent that they could not be identified, police said. Four days later, Maquon resident Marcy L. Oglesby, 50, was arrested for a charge of concealing a death and two outstanding warrants for fraud and deceptive practices, according to police.
Oglesby has since been charged with murder, attempted murder and aggravated battery, according to KWQC. Young’s body is believed to have been locked in the storage unit nearly a year before his remains were found, the station reported. Oglesby poisoned Young’s food over several months in 2021 and gave him an antidepressant without consent, according to KWQC.
