CHICAGO — Describing it as "distinctive, [with] punchy undertones and a brisk pace," an online language learning marketplace recently ranked the Chicagoan accent among the "least appealing" in the United States. Only four others are considered less desirable, according to Preply.

Preply said that the Chicagoan accent is "distinguished by 'th' sounds turning to 'd's and a unique vowel shift pattern." The four accents ranked below Chicago are below, along with a note on each from Preply:

1. New Jerseyan: Recognized for strong vowels and high volume.
2. Mid-Atlantic: Known for its clear, but often perceived as feigned, inflection.
3. Southern Ohioan: Defined by its potentially perceived as bland, flat tone.
4. New Yorker: Identified by its fast-paced, stinging delivery.

According to Preply, the rankings came from meticulous research, drawing from four reputable sources: WordTips Research, YouGov Accents Study, Language Attitudes to Speech Study, and a Thrillist article to ensure "the credibility and accuracy of our findings."

"Envision a day when 'The Bears' becomes 'Da Bears,' and 'sandwich' sounds more like 'sammich,'" Preply said regarding the local accent. "These unique pronunciation quirks lend the Chicago accent its unparalleled linguistic appeal. Nonetheless, remember that Chicagoans are immensely proud of their distinctive accent. Its vigorous and memorable features leave an impression."

The most desirable accents and rationale, according to Preply, are:
