Extreme Heat Continues Thursday, 115-Degree Heat Index Value Expected

An excessive heat warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday for most of the Chicago area.

ILLINOIS — The Chicago area is in for another day of extreme heat, as heat index values are once again expected near 115 degrees on Thursday.

An excessive heat warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday for most of the Chicago area.

"The magnitude of anticipated heat, combined with oppressive warmth at night, will lead to hazardous conditions, particularly for the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions," the weather service said.

The weather service advised drinking fluids, staying in an air-conditioned room, staying out of the sun, and to check on relatives and neighbors.

Heat index values will stay in the 90s for most of Wednesday night in the Chicago area, the weather service said.

On Wednesday, O'Hare hit a heat index of 114, which is the highest heat index for the site since July 30, 1999, according to the weather service. The highest heat index on record is 118 degrees, which happened during the July 1995 heat wave.

Current heat index values on Wednesday remain at 115 for Joliet, 120 in Morris, 113 in Kankakee, 112 in Waukegan, and 110 in Rockford.
