Illinois Couple Dead In Apparent Ice Fishing Accident: Police

Despite attempted life-saving measures, the husband and wife both died over the weekend, according to police.

HANCOCK COUNTY, IL — A couple died over the weekend after an apparent ice fishing accident in western Illinois, according to police.

Authorities identified the victims as Sean D. Chaney, 52, and Dawn A. Chaney, 50, both of rural LaHarpe.

Emergency personnel received a 911 call around 3:45 p.m. Saturday reporting two people in the water at a rural farm pond near Durham, Hancock County Sheriff Travis Duffy said in a news release.

A deputy entered the water and within minutes both victims were out of the pond, according to police, who said the couple was brought to Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa. Despite attempted life-saving measures, the husband and wife both died Saturday, according to police.

The incident is under investigation, police said.
