8 Inches Of Snow Possible In Parts Of IL: 'Late-Season' Winter Weather

Timing of winter storms: Here's when winter storms could hit overnight Friday through Saturday afternoon.

ILLINOIS — Rain will change to wet snow late Friday night into Saturday morning for parts of the Chicago area, according to the National Weather Service.

A winter storm warning has been issued for Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Lake and Ogle counties from 4 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. Travel will be difficult on Saturday morning during the period of heaviest snow, and heavy snow and gusty winds could cause power outages.

The "late-season winter storm" could bring up to 2 inches of snow per hour in parts of northern Illinois, the weather service said, and some parts of the storm warning areas could see between 5 and 8 inches of snow, with snow amounts dropping off further south.

Meanwhile, a winter water advisory is in place for Kane, DeKalb and northern Cook counties until 1 p.m. Saturday.

Between 4 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Kane and DeKalb could see accumulating snow of 2 to 6 inches, according to the National Weather Service, along with wind gusts up to 35 mph. Snow rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are likely late tonight into mid-morning Saturday.

Cook County could see 2 to 4 inches of wet, accumulating snow on Saturday between 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Slushy, wet roads are possible, along with snowfall rates in excess of 1 inch per hour.


Steady rain is expected before the snow hits the area, and will continue longer for areas south of Interstate 80, according to the weather service.

For areas to the south, like Joliet, AccuWeather is giving a 54 percent probability for a coating to an inch of snow. The private forecaster said Saturday will have a high of 39 degrees.

After snow and rain move out of the area on Saturday, highs will be around 43 degrees, according to the weather service.

Sunday will be warmer, and should remain dry during the day, according to the weather service. The high for Sunday is 53 degrees, and rain is possible late Sunday night.
