Hot, Muggy Wednesday Could Bring Storms To Chicago Area

Storms could be severe on Wednesday. Dangerous heat could hit Joliet and areas south of it with a heat index up to 105 degrees.

ILLINOIS — Severe weather is possible Wednesday, as thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service. But the day will get off to a hot and muggy start, with heat index values of 100 degrees to 105 degrees.

Joliet and areas south of it could see heat index values over 105 degrees, while Chicago and northern suburbs could have a heat index of 100 to 105 degrees.

The weather service said storms are expected to develop Wednesday afternoon and into the evening and overnight hours. Some storms could be severe, especially east of Interstate 55.

AccuWeather also called for "a strong p.m. thunderstorm" on Wednesday, with storms that could bring flash flooding and damaging winds. AccuWeather said Wednesday will be breezy, hot and humid with a high of 93 degrees.

Thunderstorms starting in the afternoon and evening will cool things off as they move in.

The weather service said the main threats with Wednesday's storms would be damaging winds, torrential rainfall and frequent lightning.

There is also a chance of storms on Thursday, which will be a bit cooler, with a high of 83 degrees.

The National Weather Service urges residents to limit strenuous outdoor activities and never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.
