Where The 256 Illinois Soldiers Who Died Since 9/11 Came From

257 soldiers from Illinois have died for the U.S. since 9/11.

Since 9/11, 256 U.S. military service members from Illinois have died fighting for the country, according to a new analysis by Axios.

Axios mapped the home county of the nearly 7,000 soldiers who have died since 9/11, the worst terrorist attack on American soil. Monday marked the 17th Memorial Day since the attack that led to the U.S. invasion of Iraq and the global war on terrorism.

On Monday, the 150th Memorial Day, the country came together to remember all the U.S. soldiers who have given their life for the country, including those who died prior to 9/11.

Axios used data from the Defense Casualty Analysis System to create the map. Axios’ analysis shows that the average age of those killed in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars was between 26 and 27 years old. An overwhelming majority of those who died (6,772) were men and the rest (168) were women.
