Algonquin Nixes Water, Sewer Rate Hike Amid Pandemic
The move is meant to help residents who've seen their finances hit hard during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Algonquin Village Board voted Tuesday to eliminate the 14 percent water and sewer rate increase scheduled for November 2020. Combined water and sewer rates were scheduled to increase from $13.35 to $15.26 per 1,000 gallons of consumption.

The Village Board took the action in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to assist residential and business customers who have been impacted economically during this time.
“It’s important to the Village Board that we support the many Algonquin residents and businesses who have suffered during the pandemic” stated Acting Village President Debby Sosine. “It is our hope that this action, along with decreasing our property tax rate over the past four years, demonstrates a good value for the Village services provided to our community.”

Maintaining safe drinking water and environmentally sound sewer services is one of the most important responsibilities of the Village. Since the implementation of a newly funded multi-year capital improvement program, many infrastructure modernization and improvement projects have taken place in Algonquin. Some of these projects include a comprehensive water meter replacement program, water main replacement, sanitary sewer replacement, and improvements to the Wastewater Treatment Facility. These investments in infrastructure help improve the reliability, safety and environmental quality of Algonquin’s water and sewer system.
Residents are assured that the Village will continue to provide this fundamental public health service in a financially sustainable manner. The water and sewer rate reduction is being partially offset by impact fees from recent residential and commercial developments along with a new state grant designated for improvements to the Wastewater Treatment Facility.
