HUNTLEY, IL — Authorities have identified the woman who died after an SUV crashed into a tree and caught fire near Huntley as Katie Lynn Bero, 45, of Huntley.
The Huntley Fire Protection District responded to the crash at the intersection of Brier Hill and Dietrich roads in rural Kane County around 7:50 a.m. on March 8, according to a news release. When crews arrived, the vehicle was “heavily involved in flames,” fire officials said. After extinguishing the fire, firefighters discovered one occupant dead inside the vehicle.
Initially, authorities were not able to identify the person killed in the collision "due to the extent of the fire damage," Kane County Undersheriff Amy Johnson told the Lake & McHenry County Scanner in March. This week, the coroner's office publicly identified the woman killed in the collision as Bero.
Bero is being remembered as a devoted mom who cherished spending time with her two sons, Michael and Austin, as well as her partner, Grant Somerman, and his daughter Paige, according to her obituary.
"Katie is remembered as an individual with an insatiable enthusiasm for living life to the fullest and always forging new paths in order to stay true to herself. She loved fiercely and wholeheartedly," according to her obituary. "She was unwaveringly loyal to all those she cared for and protected them with all her strength."
