ALGONQUIN, IL — A 62-year-old Lake in the Hills man was seriously injured Sunday afternoon after police said he lost control of his vehicle on Route 31 in Algonquin, crossed the median and struck multiple vehicles traveling in the opposite direction, police said.
Algonquin police were called at about 1:40 p.m. Sunday to Route 31 at the Route 62 bridge for a crash involving injuries. Northbound Route 31 was shut down for about two hours while authorities investigated the collision and cleared vehicles from the roadway, according to a news release from the Algonquin Police Department.
A preliminary investigation, including witness accounts, showed the man was driving a yellow Toyota MR2 Spyder north on Route 31 as he approached the Route 62 overpass, police said. The Toyota lost control and struck the raised center median before hitting multiple vehicles traveling south on Route 31.
The Toyota eventually came to rest in the middle of the northbound lanes, according to police.
The 62-year-old driver was taken to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital with serious injuries that were believed to be non-life-threatening, police said. A woman involved in the crash was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Four other vehicles were involved in the collision.
The Algonquin Police Department's Crash Investigations Team continues to investigate the crash. Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact Algonquin police at 847-658-4531.
