ALGONQUIN, IL — Algonquin Township Highway Commissioner Danijela Sandberg has filed a lawsuit challenging a McHenry County Department of Transportation order requiring her road district to maintain several deteriorating residential streets in the Algonquin Hills subdivision.
The order, issued in August, determined that the road district was responsible for maintaining 11 roads, including Sweitzer, Cermak, Lund and Linden avenues, but Sandberg argues the streets are not part of the township's road system and therefore fall outside her jurisdiction, Shaw Local is reporting. Her lawsuit also alleges that county transportation officials improperly relied on evidence from a road inspection conducted after a formal hearing without giving her an opportunity to respond.
The dispute comes amid years of complaints from residents about deteriorating roads, while Sandberg faces a separate Oct. 20 hearing over maintenance concerns involving Balder Drive in Cary, according to the article.
The legal battles have also raised questions about expenses, with Sandberg recently requesting a $40,000 transfer from road maintenance funds to cover legal services, although township trustees approved only $10,000, according to Shaw Local.
