ALGONQUIN, IL — The Rutland-Dundee Fire Protection District is mourning the death of a firefighter who suffered a medical emergency during a scheduled training exercise last week.
Firefighter Greg Witt, 35, died following the medical emergency, which occurred on Wednesday, according to a statement from the fire district. Witt joined the Rutland-Dundee Fire Protection District in January 2019. He was also a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.
"Greg was a member of our family," Chief Christopher Reedy said in a statement. "He served his country as a Marine and served this community as a firefighter, and he did both with honor."
The district did not release additional details about the medical emergency.
"Our hearts are with Greg's family, and with every member of this department who served alongside him," Reedy said. "We ask that everyone give them the time and space they need to grieve."
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. The district said it will share information once Witt's family has finalized arrangements and is ready to make them public.
