KANE COUNTY, IL — A Kane County jury has convicted a man of sexually assaulting a child more than a decade ago and threatening to kill her parents if she told anyone, prosecutors announced.
Gavino Pineda Sosa was found guilty Tuesday of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, a Class X felony, according to the Kane County State's Attorney's Office. Prosecutors said the assault occurred in 2014 while Pineda Sosa was supervising the victim and other children at his home.
Pineda Sosa took the victim, who was younger than 13 years old at the time, into a private room and sexually assaulted her, according to evidence presented during the trial. Prosecutors said Pineda Sosa, who was in a position of trust with the victim, threatened to kill her parents if they learned about the assault.
The victim first reported the incident to Carpentersville police in 2025, more than a decade after the assault occurred, according to prosecutors.
"I would like to commend the victim for her bravery in coming forward after more than a decade since the defendant sexually assaulted her," Assistant State's Attorney Jacqueline Kliment said in a statement. "No child should have to endure the pain of keeping such a terrible secret for so many years."
Kane County Judge Donald Tegeler scheduled Pineda Sosa's next court appearance for Dec. 15 at 1:30 p.m. in Courtroom 313 at the Kane County Judicial Center. Motions and sentencing are expected to be addressed at that hearing.
In addition to any prison sentence imposed, Pineda Sosa will be required to register as a sex offender for life under the Illinois Sex Offender Registration Act.
Pineda Sosa remains in custody at the Kane County Jail.
