Cheap Eats, Mexican Treats
Ann and her family head to Tacos El Norte in Lake in the Hills for a satisfying dinner that is easy on the wallet.

Even though my oldest son, Alex, is 22 and living on his own in Chicago, he is still my kid. He came home this past weekend for a quick visit so I took the opportunity to take him out to dinner with the family.
He said he would like to go , 2122 W. Algonquin Road in Lake in the Hills. With Taco Bell being in the news lately with accusations that the beef it was using for their tacos isn't real ground beef, I was pretty happy Alex chose Tacos El Norte.
Tacos El Norte is located approximately two miles west of the intersection of routes 31 and 62. The restaurant is casual and is open for lunch and dinner. The restaurant is decorated with eye-catching murals giving the interior an open air feeling.

Tacos El Norte does not have a separate children’s menu, but they are more than willing to make a menu item “child size” for the little ones in your life.
We seated ourselves at a large table and ordered our drinks. The waitress brought us tortilla chips and salsa, as well as containers of arbol chili sauce and tomatilla sauce.

We perused our menus and decided on a variety of things.
The adults ordered a chicken enchilada plate, a chicken burrito, a chicken taco and a steak taco. My 14-year-old daughter, McKenzie, ordered a chicken quesadilla and a bowl of Spanish rice. The little kids each ordered a bowl of Spanish rice, and I added a cheese quesadilla to the order for them to split.
The food arrived to us in a timely manner and it was piping hot when we dug in. The food is made to order in an open kitchen and always tastes fresh.
Alex ate his chicken burrito in record time and declared it “delicious, as always.” McKenzie, the pickiest eater of the family, said her meal was great, even though she brought half of it home. The little kids enjoyed their Spanish rice and ate it up quickly. I do not remember who ate the cheese quesadilla, but I have a feeling Logan, my six year old, gobbled that up before his sister could get to it.
Although the restaurant is a bit chilly, it is a fantastic place to take the family for dinner, or even lunch. Our total bill, for six people was $39 with a tip.
We give Tacos El Norte an enthusiastic 4 out of 5 stars!
