D300 Pays Out $100,000 In Inflatable Slide Collapse Lawsuit

An inflatable slide collapsed at an end-of-the-year picnic at a D300 elementary school in May 2013.

A partial settlement has been reached in a lawsuit filed by two students against Community Unit District 300 after an inflatable slide tipped over at Algonquin Lake Elementary School during an end-of-the-year picnic in May 2013, the Daily Herald reports. Attorney Jeffrey Martin, an attorney for two fifth grade girls injured in the incident, told the Daily Herald one girl who sustained a concussion received $75,000 from D300 and the other girl, who has an injured ankle and wrist, was awarded $25,000 from the district. The girl with the ankle injurycontinues to have trouble walking.

But the case continues to work its way through the court system. The Daily Herald reports:

The lawsuit is still active against the PTO and Ed's Rental company; Martin said discovery documents show the inflatable slide should have been weighed down with sandbags when it was moved into the gymnasium, but neither the rental company nor PTO acted to secure it and are in turn pointing fingers at each other.
