District 158 Teacher Saves Algonquin Girl from Choking on Cheez-It

Lynn Petryniec, a teacher at Heineman Middle School, was on lunch duty when a sixth-grader started choking on a Cheez-It.

The quick actions of Heineman Middle School teacher Lynn Petryniec are being credited with saving a sixth-grade student from choking on a Cheez-It that became lodged in her throat during lunch last month. Petryniec was on lunch duty Jan. 28 when Emma Farr began choking on the Cheez-It, the Northwest Herald reports.

“We rotate lunch duty every two weeks, and it happened to be my week,” Petryniec told the Northwest Herald. “I went over and asked if she could cough it out and she shook her head no.

“I asked if she could breath and she shook her head again.”

She put her arms around Emma and gave “two solid pumps” before the Cheez-It came flying out, according to the article.
