Firefighters Find 1 Dead While Battling Blaze At LITH Duplex

The fire broke out in a duplex Saturday night in the 3000 block of Impressions Drive.

LAKE IN THE HILLS, IL — Authorities are working to determine if smoke detectors inside a two-story duplex were working when a blaze broke out over the weekend. Firefighters found one person dead inside the residence while battling the fire in the 3000 block of Impressions Drive just before 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

The name of the person who died has not yet been released, and it's unclear at this point if the person was dead before the fire started or if their death was from injuries sustained in the blaze.

Huntley Fire Protection District firefighters first arriving at the blaze immediately began searching for the resident after witnesses told fire officials someone may still be inside the building, according to the news release.

Firefighters searched the rest of the house and did not find anyone else inside the duplex.

The blaze spread through the first and second story of the home , causing smoke damage throughout. It took firefighters about 15 minutes to get the blaze under control and another 30 minutes to completely extinguish the fire.

The fire caused around $200,000 in damages, and home has been deemed uninhabitable. Fire officials say the home had smoke detectors but it's not clear if they were working at the time of the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
