Coroner IDs Man Fatally Shot In Gurnee Mills Parking Lot

The shooting happened Saturday afternoon. Police are searching for the person accused of fatally shooting a 26-year-old Zion man.

GURNEE, IL — The 26-year-old Zion man fatally shot in the parking lot at Gurnee Mills has been identified as Jonathan Denicolas.

Preliminary results from an autopsy Monday revealed Denicolas died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Lake County Coroner's Office. Meanwhile, authorities are searching for the shooter accused of killing Denicolas.

Gurnee police say the shooting occurred at about 2:10 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot on the northeast side of the mall, 6170 W. Grand Avenue in Gurnee. A bystander provided aid to Denicolas until officers and paramedics arrived.

Denicolas was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in critical condition where he later died.

Christopher Covelli, spokesman for the Lake County Major Crime Task Force, said no one was in custody in connection with the fatal shooting as of Monday morning.

"Investigators continue to review video surveillance from the mall, the restaurant, and speak with witnesses who saw what happened," Covelli said. "It does not appear this was a random shooting."
