Single Bullet Found in Hallway at Huntley High

A bullet was found near the Performing Arts Center, which was in use by Willow Creek Church at the time. School was back in session Monday.

Huntley High School was placed on lockdown Sunday after a bullet was found in a hallway at the school.

The bullet was found on the ground near the Performing Arts Center at about 10:15 a.m. The facility was being used by Willow Creek Church at the time and the bullet was turned over by an Willow Creek member to church personnel, according to a Huntley Police Department press release. The church uses the PAC for its Sunday morning church services, school officials said.

Following the church service, the high was school was placed on lockdown and all remaining personnel in the school were escorted out of the building, police said.

Following a thorough search of the school, no additional “suspect items” were found, police said. Huntley Community School District 158 personnel; the Kane County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit; the Cook County Sheriff’s Police K-9 unit; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives K-9 unit; and the Huntley Police Department all assisted in the search. The facility was re-opened around 4:42 p.m. on Sunday.

Police do not believe the bullet would have been there Friday when school was in session since the “school is thoroughly cleaned each weeknight by custodial staff,” according to the news release. Huntley High School Principal Scott Rowe said this indicates the bullet was not left by a student or school staff member.

“The school is thoroughly cleaned each weeknight by custodial staff. That the item was not discovered until Sunday morning indicates that it likely did not come from a student or school staff member,” Rowe said. “However, we will continue to assist the police with their ongoing investigation.” He also said school officials and police were confident the school was safe for students and school was back in session Monday.

He also said police do not believe the discovery of the bullet is ”related to the incident we informed you about prior this week.”

Police said the “location where the item was found is used by various entities outside of school functions.” Huntley police are working the District 158 staff to “ensure a safe environment” at the school.
