MCHENRY COUNTY, IL — The McHenry County Board recognized Janiah Slaughter, a senior at Huntley High School, during its March 18 meeting for making history as the school’s first girls’ wrestling state champion.
Slaughter captured the IHSA 100-pound state title on Feb. 28 at Grossinger Arena in Bloomington, defeating undefeated Oak Forest wrestler Alexandra Sebek and finishing the season with a 37-2 record, according to Shaw Local.
Slaughter, who returned for her senior season after taking her junior year off to focus on her health, also won regional and sectional titles, as well as tournaments in Maine East, Minooka, and Ohio, according to the article. Her victory made her the first female wrestler from Huntley High School and the first in McHenry County to win an individual state wrestling championship, capping a high school career with a 93-10 overall record.
