Lake in the Hills, IL - The holidays are a time for friends, family and coworkers to come together in celebration. Wherever you are — at an office party, a family member’s home or at a bar — it is essential to make the lifesaving choice to drive sober when the party ends. To help spread the message about the danger sof impaired driving, the Lake in the Hills Police Department is partnering with the Illinois Department ofTransportation, the Illinois State Police and nearly 200 police and sheriff’s departments across the state. The goal is simple: get impaired drunk drivers off the road and help save lives. This high-visibility enforcement campaign runs from December 16, 2019 – January 2, 2020. This enforcement campaign coincides with the holiday season, which is one of the deadliest times of the year in terms of drunk-driving fatalities. Law enforcement will show zero tolerance for drunk or drugged driving.

Statistics show much work is still needed to end impaired driving. The National Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration (NHTSA) reports 839 people lost their lives in traffic crashes involving a drunk driver inDecember 2018. According to NHTSA, during the Christmas and New Year’s Day holiday periods last year there were more drunk driving related fatalities (285) than during any other holiday period. However, alcohol-impaired driving isn’t the only risk on the road. Drug-impaired driving is also on the rise. If drivers are impaired by any substance — whether alcohol or drugs — they should not get behind the wheel.
