LITH Police To Target Speeders
The local police department is keeping a close eye out for speeders as part of an enforcement effort through July 27.
LAKE IN THE HILLS, IL — The Lake in the Hills Police Department is upping its patrol efforts over the next week as officers keep a close eye out for speeders. The local police department will be conducting extra patrols between July 17 and 27 in an effort to promote safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists, according to a news release from the police department.
The police department hopes the enforcement effort will help to reduce speeding on local roadways and prevent injuries and deaths. In 2017, speed was the reason for 42 percent of all fatal crashes in Illinois, which amounts to 462 deaths or one life lost every 19 hours.

- When a pedestrian is hit by a car at 20 MPH there is a 10 percent likelihood of being killed
- At a speed of 30 MPH the percentage increases to a 50 percent likelihood of being killed
- The higher the speed at impact, the more severe the injuries sustained
- When speeding there is a greater chance that other road users will misjudge how fast you are traveling
- Speeding extends the distance required to stop a vehicle in emergency situations
- Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to navigate safely around curves or objects in the roadway
The 10-day mobilization in Lake in the Hills if funded by federal highway safety funds, which are doled out by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
