LITH Police Plan For Halloween Traffic Detail
The local police department will be out in full force.

LITHPD: The Lake in the Hills Police Department reminds motorists of the dangers of impaired driving, particularly on Halloween. Special patrols will be conducted from Saturday, October 19th – Sunday, November 3rd to crack down on alcohol and drug impaired drivers. The statistics are scary – according to the National Safety Council, children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year. For anyone who plans to be on the road, especially during trick-or-treating hours, please watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs. Be sure to enter and exit driveways carefully, and watch for children in dark clothing.
Simple precautions can make Halloween a fun and safe night for kids of all ages. Please remember the following safety tips:
Accompany young children on the neighborhood rounds.
Teach children never to enter a stranger's home or car.
Instruct older children to travel only in familiar, well-lit areas and stick with their friends.
Remember reflective tape for costumes and trick-or-treat bags.
Remain on well-lit streets and always use sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the side as possible.
Never cut across yards. Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.
Remind children to watch for cars that are turning or backing up.
Don't assume the right of way. Motorists may have difficulty seeing trick-or-treaters.
Children and adults are reminded to put electronic devices down, keep heads up and safely walk
(don’t run) across the street.
If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact local law enforcement as soon as it is safe to do so. The Halloween enforcement effort is made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
