Man Gets 15 Years for Setting Off Molotov Cocktail at Algonquin Caputo's

A 27-year-old Sleepy Hollow man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for throwing a Molotov cocktail in the deli section of the Algonquin Caputo's grocery store in August 2012. 

Fabian J. Torres pled guilty but mentally ill Thursday to a charge of attempt aggravated arson and was sentenced to serve the maximum term of 15 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, according to a McHenry County State's Attorney's Office press release. 

Prosecutors said Torres set off an incendiary device, a glass bottle containing flammable liquid, by lobbing it onto the floor of the store, located at 100 S. Randall Road, on Aug. 21, 2012. 

Numerous employees and customers were in the store at the time. Customers in the store chased the defendant out to the parking lot and detained him until the Algonquin Police responded, according to the news release.

Prosecutors said Torres did suffer from a mental illness "which, while not a legal defense to the charge, did contribute to his criminal conduct."
