ELGIN, IL — Hudson Fox Hayes was supposed to be Hudson Ray Hayes — but after his quick arrival in his parents' car while in the left-turn lane at Fox Lane in Elgin, Tim and Katie Hayes decided to change his middle name.

His birth story on April Fools' Day is a memorable one. Not many mothers end up having a baby while in the passenger seat, waiting in traffic and just a quarter-mile from their intended destination, Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin, the Northwest Herald is reporting.

"Hudson Hayes didn’t just come a few days early. He also came before we made it to Sherman. Our little man greeted us at 9:50 this morning in the turn lane of Randall Rd and Fox Lane," Hayes wrote in a Facebook post announcing his son's birth to friends and family.

Hayes credited his "amazingly tough and brave wife" for handling the obviously unexpected situation so well. Tim Hayes, who is a teacher and wrestling coach at Dundee-Crown High School in Carpentersville, helped get the baby out and referred to it all as a "very scary situation" at the time.

"I put it in park. She did all the work. She got the head out. I got my arm into his armpit and with three big pushes, I was able to get him out. I handed him back to her. She didn't even hold up traffic. We didn't even miss an arrow," Tim Hayes told the Northwest Herald.

They headed to the hospital, where Hudson weighed in at 7 pounds, 5 ounces. Both baby and mom are doing well and healthy, Hayes told Patch on Monday. Katie and Hudson are back home with Tim and the Hayes' other children, Julia and Hayden, in Carpentersville.
