Two positions are available for regular members, and two for alternate members who serve in the absence of regular members.

The Zoning Board of Appeals conducts public hearings and makes recommendations to the County Board regarding property owner requests to rezone properties, obtain conditional use permits, and receive variations from the zoning provisions of the McHenry County Unified Development Ordinance.

Meetings typically take place at 1:30 p.m. Thursdays, and last between one and three hours; members have the option of participating remotely in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Members receive a per diem of $110 for each meeting day.

As no two Zoning Board of Appeals members may be from the same township, all applicants for the current vacancies must reside in Algonquin, Chemung, Hebron, Burton, Hartland, Marengo, Riley, Seneca, Coral, Grafton, Greenwood or Dorr townships. Because the county has only received applications thus far from Algonquin, Riley, and Grafton townships, applicants from residents of the remaining townships are particularly encouraged.

Applicants must fill out the standard county application form, as well as a supplemental application specific to the Zoning Board of Appeals. They can be found on the county Appointments page, which you can reach by clicking here. Forms are also available at the County Administration Office, 667 Ware Road, Room 209, Woodstock, IL 60098.

If mailing your application, certified or registered mail is recommended. Mailed applications should be sent to: McHenry County Board, 2200 North Seminary Avenue, Woodstock, IL 60098.

It is anticipated that the County Board Planning, Environment, and Development Committee will conduct interviews with eligible candidates at its Tuesday, Feb. 2 meeting.
