ALGOQNUIN, IL — Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream, a popular Ohio-based brand known for its made-on-site ice cream and large menu of rotating flavors, is expanding into the Chicago suburbs.
The company plans to open locations in Algonquin, Elgin and the Geneva/St. Charles area, with the first shops expected to debut in late 2027. Founded in 1945 in Youngstown, Ohio, Handel’s now operates more than 170 locations nationwide and continues to grow through franchising, the Daily Herald is reporting.
Each shop offers dozens of flavors made in-house, along with sorbets, sherbets and vegan options. In National Geographic's 10 Best of Everything book, Handel's received a nod as having the best ice cream.
