Rep. Skillicorn Files Resolution to Oppose Mileage Tax

EAST DUNDEE – State Representative Allen Skillicorn (R-East Dundee) has filed House Resolution 139 to oppose the creation of a per miles driven tax in Illinois.

“It’s just astonishing how so many of the politicians in Springfield will try anything to tax us more,” said Skillicorn. “Illinois lost 45,000 people last year alone because of the multitude of taxes and fees that are forcing families and businesses to pick up and leave, but Springfield keeps trying to get more. Even though the public has already loudly voiced opposition on multiple occasions to the idea of a per mile tax, they are trying it again. We must continue to say no to this ridiculous idea.”

House Resolution 139 calls on the state to recognize the necessity of traveling to work and how a per mile tax will drive more people out of the state and discourage others from coming to Illinois. It calls for opposition to any mileage tax being instituted in Illinois now or in the future.

Skillicorn also questioned the constitutionality of placing a device in residents’ vehicles to track their miles travelled. Although many consumers willing place tracking transponders in their vehicles for auto insurance discounts, the state requiring a similar transponder for taxing purposes would likely violate a person’s right to privacy granted through the U.S. Constitution.
