Speaker Encourages LITH Home Businesses to Consider Commercial Space

The Village of Lake in the Hills sponsored a workshop on March 23 for home business owners.

MaryAnn Dimitrov has operated her Medical Basix business from her home for the last five years and says it's time to move it out into the public eye.

At a meeting hosted by the village's community development department last month, Dimitrov spoke to about ten 0ther home-based business owners in Lake in the Hills, encouraging them to consider the benefits of moving into a commerical space.

"I just want more freedom,'' Dimitrov told the group of holding her medical billing and coding classes and "boot camps'' for colleges and universities.

The March 23 workshop - Whether You Think You Can Or Think You Can't: Moving Your Business Out of Your Home - brought buiness owners together with a local commercial real estate manager to talk about reasons to move a business out of the home.

Dimitrov holds her classes at her client's facilities, working around their schedules.

"It will provide me with the freedom I'm looking for - to have a place where I can develop these programs and offer these things at my convenience,'' she said.

And there is plenty of commercial space available in the village, she said, having been searching already.

"There is a lot out there, I know,'' she said. "This is the greatest time for us to do this.''

RPrime Time to Buy Commercial Space

John Fuhler, managing member of Fuhler Property Management, LLC, agreed that now is a prime time to find commerical space.

"If you want to start a new business, now's the time,'' he said. ``You'll get the best deal you're going to get. Landlords - if they have anything on the ball at all - they're going to work with you. Get a good deal and lock it in.''

Fuhler encouraged the group to spend a little extra money for a more visible location and to continue to advertise their business even after they moved into a commercial space.

"You've got to get out there and market yourself,'' he said. ``The sign is important but by itself it's no good.''

Getting a business plan together is also important, said Sandy Oslance, president of the Algonquin/Lake in the Hills Chamber of Commerce.

"If you just write it on a piece of notebok paper, you've started a plan,'' Oslance said.
