The Turtle Island expansion led to the addition of several new amenities, including a pavilion, an ADA-compliant fishing pier, a butterfly garden, educational signage, walking paths, and a picnic area. The project also encompassed landscape improvements, bank stabilization features, and sustainable infrastructure, including a green roof and rain barrels.
“The Turtle Island improvement project greatly enhanced a popular location for anglers, boaters, and visitors to Woods Creek Lake,” said Public Works Director Tom Migatz. “We are grateful to our community members who have been understanding of the operational changes in place throughout the renovation process.”

Contractors completed the renovation of Turtle Island Park between June and October 2020. An Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant awarded by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources covered half of the project cost, which totaled $398,607.50.
Through this project, the Village aimed to improve a quality fishing venue, to demonstrate examples of green infrastructure, and to create a scenic family gathering site.
“Village staff, the Parks and Recreation Board, and the Board of Trustees diligently pursued the Turtle Island expansion over several years, and we look forward to seeing the community enjoy the new amenities,” said Village Administrator Fred Mullard. “The improvement would not have been possible without the persistence, vision, and resourcefulness of all of them.”
All guests at the ribbon cutting ceremony will be asked to wear face coverings when unable to maintain a distance of six feet from others in order to stop the spread of COVID-19. Please contact the Public Works Department at 847-960-7500 for additional information. To learn more about the OSLAD grant awarded to the Village, view this previous press release.
