The Public Works Department planned to replace the Sunset Skate Park equipment in 2021 as the original equipment had reached the end of its twenty-year lifespan based on the industry standard and assessed physical condition. Early this year, staff surveyed community members to gauge interest in potential features and narrow down design concept options.

“Our equipment replacement process is collaborative each step of the way,” said Public Works Director Tom Migatz. “The Public Works team is grateful for the input received from community members, elected officials, staff, and vendors, all of whom shaped the replacement process and led us to an excellent new skate park design for our community to enjoy.”

The final Sunset Skate Park design concept was selected after weighing the community’s input and holding discussions during Parks and Recreation Board and Board of Trustees meetings. American Ramp Company was selected as the vendor.

“We are excited to celebrate the Sunset Skate Park reopening with the community,” said Superintendent of Public Properties Scott Parchutz. “With the modernized equipment, Sunset Skate Park will continue to be a popular spot for recreation for years to come.”

Sunset Skate Park reopened to the public on August 6. The new design features a beginner friendly area and an area for intermediate to advanced skaters, scooter riders, and bike riders.

The Public Works Department would also like to invite community members to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the addition of a new basketball court at Cattail Park on Thursday, September 23 at 6:30 p.m. The court was built adjacent to the playground to establish a contiguous space for recreation.

“Our staff is eager to make improvements to parks, facilities, sports courts, and recreation spaces,” said Public Works Director Tom Migatz. “The new court expands the Village’s existing basketball facilities that include full and half courts at Barbara Key, Ken Carpenter, Sunset, Leroy Guy, Jaycee, Stoneybrook, and Lynn Dillow parks.”

The Parks and Recreation Board is a seven-member board of Lake in the Hills residents, each appointed by the Village President, that recommends recreation programs and ensures park development. Members meet on the first Thursday of each month at Village Hall, 600 Harvest Gate. The meetings start at 6:30 p.m. and are open to the public. Learn more about the board at lith.org.
