Alsip Fire Department Actively Recruiting Firefighter/Paramedics

ALSIP, IL — The Alsip Fire Department is in need of new firefighters to provide protection and rescue services to residents. The Alsip Board of Fire and Police Commissioners are accepting applications through Feb. 27 for firefighter/paramedics. The village serves a population of 19,000 and currently has 33 sworn firefighter/paramedics.

All applicants must be age 20 or older, and no older than 35 by the Feb. 27 deadline date to apply. In addition, applicants must be a U.S. citizen, possess a valid driver’s license, have a high school diploma or GED, and no felony convictions. Other requirements include:

  • Provide a valid CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test Card) with Ladder Climb Certification issued with 12 months of the application deadline date (February 27, 2023);
  • Be able to speak, read, and write the English language fluently;
  • Must successfully meet all such other requirements as set forth by the Illinois Compiled Statutes and the Alsip Fire and Police Commission Rules and Regulations, such as: attend a mandatory orientation meeting, successfully pass a written examination, oral interview, polygraph test, background investigation, and pass a medical examination and drug test screening by a physician designated by the Village of Alsip;
  • All firefighters shall reside within the State of Illinois within six months of completion of their probation;
  • Pay a $30 non-refundable application processing fee.

Possess an OSFM Certificate Firefighter II, Basic Operations Firefighter Certificate, or have a certificate of completion from the Basic Operations Firefighter from the Illinois Fire Service Institute, or the Northern Illinois Public Safety Training Academy, or the Romeoville Fire Academy, or from a Illinois Community College that offers a Basic Operations Firefighter program or equivalent NFPA Firefighter I (out of state applicants) at time of application;

  • Provide a valid CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test Card) with Ladder Climb Certification issued with 12 months of the application deadline date (February 27, 2023);

  • Military Experience: Applicants with a minimum of (1) year of active duty U.S. military service with an Honorable Discharge. Military Form DD-214 (indicating status of discharge) must be submitted with application to qualify;
  • Fire Service Experience: Applicants who have at least two (2) years full-time (career) firefighting employment. A copy of all payroll stubs for the last two (2) year period -OR- letter from current, and any previous employers must be submitted with application to qualify;
  • Education: Possess an Associate’s Degree in the field of Fire Service or Emergency Medical Services from an accredited community or junior college -OR- a Bachelor’s Degree in any field from an accredited college or university. A copy of the diploma or unofficial transcripts must be submitted with application to qualify;
  • Residency: Applicants who are currently residents of the Village of Alsip at the time of application. Copy of mortgage/rental lease agreement, tax documents, or current utility bill indicating the applicant's name and current address must be submitted at time of application to qualify.

Applications must be submitted ONLINE by 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27. Faxed, e-mailed, mailed or dropped off applications will NOT be accepted. Applications submitted after the deadline will NOT be accepted. Only one application per person, per testing cycle, will be accepted. Apply online here.

Mandatory Orientation and Written Examination Testing Dates:

Following the completion of all application materials and review of minimum qualifications, successful applicants will be invited to attend a mandatory virtual orientation meeting conducted by the Alsip Board of Fire and Police Commissioners, Wednesday, March 8, at a time to be determined. (Link will be provided in an email confirmation sent to all candidates).

After the mandatory orientation, applicants will be invited to participate in remote online written exam testing starting at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, March 14 through 4 p.m. Thursday, March 16. The test will only be available during this time. Candidates will need to have access to a laptop or desktop computer. All candidates will receive an email approximately one week prior to the written exam date regarding their status in the process. NOTE: PLEASE BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR EMAIL SPAM FOLDER AS SOMETIMES EMAIL PROVIDERS (SUCH AS GMAIL, YAHOO, ETC.) SEND OUR EMAILS DIRECTLY TO SPAM. As part of the application process, applicants will be required to submit copies of the following documents as part of your application.

Applicants failing to provide the following documentation with their application will be ineligible to continue in the hiring process.

  • Birth Certificate;
  • High School Diploma -OR- GED Equivalent Certificate;
  • Valid Driver's License;
  • Current CPAT card with ladder climb (please see Summary of Hiring Process for more information on obtaining CPAT)
  • Current EMT-P -OR- EMT-B license issued by the IDPH;
  • If an EMT-B, proof of current enrollment in a paramedic program;
  • OSFM Certificate Firefighter II -OR- Basic Operations Firefighter -OR- Equivalent;
  • Preference Points Documentation (proof of one of the following: military, college degree, fire service experience, or residency).
