Balloon-Popping Girlfriend Menaces Boyfriend With Knife: Cops

Alsip woman apparently upset over events earlier in the evening held knife one inch away from boyfriend's stomach, police said.

OAK LAWN, IL -- A heavily intoxicated woman menaced her boyfriend with a steak knife following an argument following a quarrel, reports said.

Oak Lawn police responded to an apartment building in the 10300 block of South Pulaski Road on April 30. Dispatch advised that a woman, later identified as Linda Iris Cabrales, 28, of Alsip, was outside the building in her car honking the horn.

Cabrales’ boyfriend told police that his girlfriend was highly intoxicated and threatened him with a knife. Cabrales had apparently become upset over events that occurred earlier in the evening. When she came by to pick up her belongings, her boyfriend said she started popping balloons inside the apartment with a knife, reports said.

According to the report, the boyfriend and his roommate told her to calm down, when she turned the knife on her boyfriend. Cabrales allegedly held the knife an inch away from her boyfriend’s stomach. Thinking she might stab him, the boyfriend said he wrestled the knife out of Cabrales’ hand. The boyfriend told police he was able to get the knife away and put it away in a bedroom.

Officers found the a steak knife with a black handle in the bedroom. Asked if she had threatened her boyfriend with the knife, Cabrales allegedly told the officers they would find her fingerprints on the knife because because she had washed dishes earlier in the day.

Her boyfriend’s roommate gave a similar account to police, said Cabrales arrived at the apartment drunk. She started popping balloons with the knife and almost stabbed her boyfriend. They both yelled at her to calm down, police said.

Cabrales was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault. She was brought to the Leighton Criminal Courts Building the next day for a bond hearing.
