Blue Island Man Ordered Detained In Crash That Killed Man On Mobility Scooter: Sherrif

COOK COUNTY, IL – A Blue Island man was charged in a hit-and-run crash that killed a man on a mobility scooter earlier this month, Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said. David Avalos, 38, is facing charges of aggravated DUI causing death and leaving the scene of an accident causing death.
Around 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 9, Robbins police contacted the Cook County Sheriff’s Police to investigate a fatal crash that killed a man crossing the street near 139th Street and Kedzie Avenue on a mobility scooter, sheriff’s police said.
Cook County detectives responded to the scene, where they learned that a vehicle struck 63-year-old Sammy Simmons in the crosswalk and then drove off. Simmons was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

During their investigation, detectives determined that Avalos was driving the minivan that struck Simmons, sheriff’s police said. Avalos was also alleged to have consumed multiple alcoholic beverages before getting behind the wheel.
Avalos was ordered detained to Cook County Jail following a pre-detention hearing Thursday at the Markham Courthouse.
