Cal-Sag Bridge Will Be Closed Two Months For Steel Repairs

Weather permitting, repairs will begin Oct. 16 and continue through mid-December. Crestwood PD offers alternative routes for duration.

CRESTWOOD, IL -- Beginning Oct. 16, the bridge over the Cal Sag Channel will be fully closed between 127th Street and 135th Street in Crestwood, weather permitting. The Illinois Department of Transportation said repairs to the bridge will require its full closure. The repairs also will require a closure on the Illinois Tollway’s exit ramp from the southbound Tri-State Tollway (Interstate 294) to southbound Cicero Avenue.

IDOT estimates that the bridge on Cicero Avenue over the Cal Sag Channel will be closed until mid-December. Some retailers at Crestwood’s Rivercrest Shopping Center are already expressing concerns about the bridge closure affecting the holiday retail season. A posted detour will direct southbound Cicero Avenue traffic to go west on 127th Street and southeast on Cal Sag Road to meet back with Cicero Avenue. Northbound Cicero Avenue traffic will take the reverse route.

The Tollway’s exit ramp from southbound Illinois 294 to southbound Cicero Avenue also will be closed. Southbound Interstate 294 traffic should take the Cicero Avenue 127th Street exit ramp and keep right to access 127th Street and northbound Cicero Avenue.

The project involves structural and steel repairs on the bridge that carries Illinois 50/83 over the Cal Sag Channel. IDOT says the repairs will improve safety and extend the lifespan of the bridge. Motorists should allow extra travel time and expect delays during the project. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

For motorists traveling northbound on Cicero Avenue, the Crestwood Police Department Facebook Page offers the following alternate routes:
