Chicago Man Yells Threats, Spits At Alsip Cops: Prosecutor

ALSIP, IL -- A Chicago man yelling threats outside a woman’s home is facing felony charges after he spit in the faces of Alsip police officers, prosecutors said. James Shinaul, 28, appeared before Cook County Judge Peter Felice is charged with felony aggravated battery to a police officer, and misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct, aggravated assault to a police officer and resisting arrest. Shinaul was recently released from parole.

Alsip police responded to a call of a disturbance on May 13. Shinaul was allegedly standing outside a home in the 4400 block of West 116th Place, yelling “I’m going to make you pay” to a woman inside the house. The prosecutor said police had been at the residence twice the same day.

According to the charges, when officers found Shinaul, he began flailing his arms when police tried to handcuff him. Shinaul was taken to the ground when he spit in a police officer’s face, the prosecutor said. Eventually officers got Shinaul into the back of the patrol car, when he began kicking the window in the back seat. When officers were tying zip ties to Shinaul’s feet, the prosecutor said Shinaul spit at police a second time.

“I think a police officer would rather get punched than have someone spit in his face,” Felice said.

The prosecutor said that Shinaul has five felony convictions, including a recent stint in the Illinois Department of Corrections for possession of a controlled substance. Bail was set at $100,000. Shinaul is due back in court June 4 in Bridgeview.
