D218 Foundation awards $6,500 in grants for fall semester

Science, art, math, English, social studies teachers win funding.

The Friends of Community High School District 218 Education Foundation awarded $6,500 in grants this semester to teachers for a range of enrichment projects. Aside from teacher grants, the Foundation funds college scholarships for students.

Examples include:

Math teacher Meghan Carlson and industrial technology teacher Ron Rivera received funds for their Geometry and Computer-Aided Design class. Grant funds will purchase a Bosch T4B gravity-rise miter
saw stand and DeWalt DWS780 12-inch double bevel sliding compound miter saw, and Pro-Series GSSI Multipurpose Scaffolding. They will use these tools to build new ticket booths and for future construction projects.

English teacher Nikki Hite won a grant to buy a SNO (Student Newspapers Online) App that students can download from Apple and Android stores. The grant will support the cost of developing the application for her student newspaper.

Art teacher Leo DeLaRosa won a grant to purchase a Canon EOS Rebel T5 Digital SLR Kit with 18-55mm and 75-300mm lenses, 16GB memory card and extra battery.

Art teacher Jim Hart won a grant for Merchmaker All-in-One Screen Printing Kit for screen printing.

Math teacher Katie McGuinness won grant funds to purchase Angle/Leg manipulation Class Set, Geo Sticks Class Set, Geometry Memory Game, Metal Safety Compass, Dry Erase Magnetic Compass, Dry Erase Magnetic Protractors.

Science teacher Tierney Smith won a grant to buy Premium Kit, Invention workbooks and Gizmos & Gadgets Kit which are Bluetooth enabled.

Art teacher Michelle Richardella received a grant for full-color prints, digital copies of photos, plastic sleeves
for 33 students.

Art teacher Jen Glaz receive a grant for Nomad FleX Long Tip Paint Brush Stylus/The Nomad Stylus Drawing Stylus for iPad's, Wifi Display Dongle, Aerb Wireless HDMI Display Adapter Streaming Mirroring Smartphone Tablet PC Screen to HDMI TV Monitor Projector for iPhone, iPad and Macbook, Crenova XPE460 LED Video Projector Home Projector, iPad Stand, Tablet Stand and Mini iPad stand and iPhone flash drive.

Social studies teacher Jason Nisavic won a grant to purchase a podcasting guide, sound panels, microphone,
headphones and podcasting software.

Science teacher Hala Shalabi won a grant to buy heart models.

The Foundation awarded a grant to science teacher Megan Brewczynski for kits to construct solar-powered cars.
