Worth Township Hosts Building Trades Career Fair

Worth Township's Building Trades Career Fair connects community members with union and trade organization representatives April 26 in Alsip.

ALSIP, IL – Worth Township will host a Building Trades Career Fair on Tuesday, April 26. Various unions and trade groups will be meeting with young people as they consider what career patch to take from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Worth Township Gym, 11601 S. Pulaski Road, Alsip. High school students, recent high school graduates and veterans are especially encouraged to attend.

The career fair is being organized by Town Clerk Eamon McMahon, in partnership with CISCO-CISCO-Construction Industry Service Corporation, and the Chicago and Cook County Building Trades to promote careers in the building trades.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for young people and those looking for new careers to learn about the kind of job opportunities available in the Chicago area trades,” McMahon said in a news release. “We will have hands on exhibits for students and support for entrance exams required to enter the trades.”

The career fair is being held in Worth Township, home to three building trade apprenticeships and numerous building trade members and their families. McMahon himself is the business agent of the Mid-American Regional Council to Carpenters.

“Worth Township has by far the highest density of union members and their families in the entire State of Illinois,” McMahon added.

Nationally, there is a big demand for new apprentices and trained trade workers to rebuild crumbling and aged infrastructure across the country. The building trade apprenticeship programs are seen as an alternative to the financial investment in a four-year education.

“Instead of paying out tens of thousands of dollars in a college degree, apprentices can earn tens of thousands of dollars while they learn their trade,” McMahon said.

Representatives from the carpenters, sheet metal, electrical, sprinkler fitters and plumbers unions will be on hand to meet and network with attendees. More trade organizations and union representatives are expected to be added.
