'A Day With A Detective' Offers Inside Look At Private Investigations

The Arlington Heights program will feature surveillance equipment, covert cameras and other tools used by licensed investigators.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — True-crime enthusiasts and aspiring investigators can get a hands-on look at the private detective profession during "A Day With a Detective" later this month.

The six- to seven-hour program is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 22, at The Investigative Training Institute, 5 E. College Drive, Suite 102, in Arlington Heights.

Rather than a traditional lecture, the course will allow participants to examine professional surveillance tools, covert cameras, video equipment and counter-surveillance instruments.

Demonstrations will also cover technology used to identify possible hidden cameras, microphones and transmitting devices.

Investigation Methods And Legal Limits

Participants will learn about surveillance methods, interviewing, evidence, report writing and the legal and ethical restrictions governing licensed private investigators.

"Most people only know private investigators through television, movies and true-crime programs," instructor John C. Frycek said in a statement.

"This course gives people the opportunity to see the actual equipment, learn how real investigations are approached and experience the profession from the inside."

Frycek is a veteran Illinois-licensed private detective. He and the other instructors have more than 35 years of experience in the profession, according to the training institute.

The program is intended for true-crime fans, criminal justice students, security professionals, writers, career changers, aspiring investigators and other interested residents.

Tuition is $149 per person and includes lunch. Registration is available through the Investigative Training Institute's website.
