ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — Veterans and current members of the U.S. military are being invited to take part in one of John Hersey High School's biggest annual traditions.
The school's Big Game will return Friday, Sept. 11, putting students from Hersey's Career Life Skills program at center court for a full basketball game in front of the student body.
The event has become one of Hersey's most anticipated school traditions, with about 2,000 students filling the gym as players are introduced and students and staff line the court.
This year's event will also include recognition of veterans, active service members and members of the Arlington Heights police and fire departments.
Organizers said the Sept. 11 date offers an opportunity to bring together Hersey's focus on inclusion with recognition of those who have served in the military and in local public safety.
Veterans and service members are asked to arrive at 1:30 p.m. at the school's front entrance on Thomas Street, 1900 E. Thomas St. They are encouraged to wear something identifying their branch or service, such as a cap.
After checking in at the security window, students will guide participants to the main gym. Veterans and first responders will be recognized at the start of the event, with the game scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
Those planning to participate are asked to register in advance by emailing their name, branch of service and contact information to Dick Mortensen at dick.mortensen@d214.org so parking and reception plans can be coordinated.
Additional information is expected to be shared as the event approaches.
