HOFFMAN ESTATES, IL — Police in nearby Hoffman Estates are stepping up traffic enforcement for Halloween and reminding motorists to plan a sober ride before heading to parties and other celebrations.
The department announced the effort Monday, urging drivers to buckle up, follow traffic laws and remain alert as children and families walk through neighborhoods after dark.
The enforcement effort includes the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" and "Drive High. Get a DUI" campaigns, according to the department's Oct. 19 release.
Police emphasized that impaired driving includes impairment from alcohol, cannabis and other drugs. The department also reminded motorists that all vehicle occupants must wear seat belts.

The department did not specify enforcement dates or checkpoint locations in its announcement.
The increased enforcement is funded through federal highway safety grants administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation. The campaigns are supported by Illinois State Police and local law enforcement agencies statewide, along with IDOT's "It's Not a Game" traffic safety initiative.
