Arlington Heights Group Plans 9/11 Firefighter Tribute, Hydration Kit Drive

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — An Arlington Heights volunteer group is planning a Sept. 11 service project honoring the 343 firefighters who died in the 2001 terrorist attacks while recognizing the health risks faced by firefighters today.

The Arlington Heights chapter of Project Pulmonary will host its "Breathe for 343" Hydration Kit Campaign from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library.

Volunteers will assemble hydration kits, create personalized thank-you cards for firefighters and learn about firefighter lung health, according to Ananya Ganji, outreach director for the local Project Pulmonary chapter.

One completed hydration kit will be delivered to Arlington Heights Fire Station 2, 1150 N. Arlington Heights Road, as a gesture of appreciation to local firefighters.

The Arlington Heights effort is part of a nationwide Project Pulmonary campaign involving chapters across the country. Organizers hope to distribute more than 500 hydration kits through the initiative.

The campaign comes on the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Project Pulmonary said the effort is intended both to remember the 343 firefighters killed that day and to highlight the respiratory and other health risks firefighters continue to face in the course of their work.
