The police station could cost up to $27.9 million.

Submission by the village of Arlington Heights

The Village is moving forward with plans to construct a new Police Station on the site of the current facility, which could cost up to $27.9 million for construction of the new building.

Final recommendations from FGM Architects, a firm selected to prepare a Feasibility Study for utilizing the current police station site and municipal campus including the Village Hall, were presented to the Village Board on September 8, 2015. The Village Board approved a recommendation that includes constructing a two-story, 70,500 square-foot-facility with a basement and a 10,000-square-foot indoor garage for police vehicles. The new building will be located on the current site of the Police Station, allowing for the advantage to use nearby Village facilities for additional space needs.

The agreed-upon concept design is highly functional, secure and provides all of the space needs for modern-day policing. To minimize the size of the Police Station and the costs of a new facility, the top floor of Village Hall will be used for Police Records Archive Storage and Long Term Evidence Storage. Other off-site facilities are also proposed to be utilized.

The $27.9 million budgeted for the construction of a new Police Station is representative of a good, middle-of-the road construction project that is of high quality. Costs could fluctuate as the Village makes final decisions on the design and construction processes.

The final report (found below) also details the goals of the study, explains the need for a new Police Station that can accommodate modern police technology and new law enforcement standards, as well as compares the design and layout of other area police facilities recently built. The final report also compares information that was highlighted in earlier space needs studies of the facility.

Next steps for the Village team working on the Police Station project is to evaluate procurement measures and create necessary RFPs (Requests for Proposals) for the project. The Village Board will be able to continually examine and evaluate costs as the process gets underway.

The construction of the new facility does not include costs pertaining to furnishings, contingency costs and costs associated with the temporary relocation of the Police Department. Below is the final report from FGM Architects and the conceptual layout plan of the new Police Station.
