ELK GROVE VILLAGE, IL — Soon after it was learned President Joe Biden's planned trip to Chicago Wednesday would include a stop at Elk Grove Technology Park, Elk Grove Village Mayor Craig Johnson said the entire trip has been canceled.

Biden was set to visit Chicago to talk about vaccine mandates. On Tuesday evening, the White House confirmed the trip was canceled.

The president will be in Washington, D.C., to focus on negotiations over his legislative agenda, including his infrastructure and other spending plans, officials told Chicago-area media outlets.

During an interview on WLS-AM 890 Tuesday afternoon, Johnson said the Secret Service had told Police Chief Charles Walsh that "circumstances rising in Washington D.C." are the reason for the cancelation. The news came during the "The John Howell Show," airing 4 to 7 p.m. weekdays on WLS-AM 890.

Last week, the White House confirmed the purpose of the trip was to encourage vaccine mandates for businesses. Officials did not originally specify where the president would be visiting.
