Boy, 12, Struck By Car While Biking In Arlington Heights: Police

The accident happened Wednesday night at the intersection of Thomas Street and Mitchell Avenue.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — A 12-year-old boy is recovering from a Wednesday night accident when he was struck by a car while bicycling near Thomas Street and Mitchell Avenue in Arlington Heights. Police tell Patch the incident happened at around 6 p.m. and an investigation is ongoing.

The boy was rushed to Northwest Community Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police would not disclose any other specifics regarding the injuries, but did say the boy's mother was notified following the accident.

According to Shawn Gyorke, deputy chief of the Arlington Heights Police Department's patrol division, a preliminary investigation has revealed the motorist, who had been stopped at a stop sign at the intersection, began driving at the same time the boy attempted to cross the street on his bike in front of the vehicle.

Police believe the driver didn't see the boy before he began driving back into traffic. The boy was knocked off his bicycle and sustained the minor injuries.

The incident did not involve impairment or any speed violations, according to police.
