Bus Driver Killed In I-90 Crash Near Elk Grove Village

The driver of the other vehicle involved in the Friday crash was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

ELK GROVE VILLAGE, IL — A 66-year-old Wheeling man, who was driving a Greyhound bus on Interstate-90 Friday, died following an accident near Elk Grove Village. The driver of the other car, a 62-year-old Chicago woman, was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The crash, which happened at around 2:55 p.m., closed traffic on the highway for nearly four hours, according to Illinois State Police.

The name of the deceased, who was pronounced dead at the scene, is being withheld at this time pending next-of-kin notification.

Police said a preliminary investigation revealed that the woman was driving her 2004 Nissan west on I-90 near Busse Road, Elk Grove Village. The man was driving his 2017 Greyhound bus also west, next to the other vehicle in the adjacent lane. For unknown reasons, the man drove the bus into the same lane as the Nissan and struck the car, causing both cars to strike the median wall. The Nissan flipped onto its roof on the left shoulder. The bus crossed all lanes of traffic and came to rest on the right (north) side of the roadway.

Police said at around 3:05 p.m., the left three lanes of I-90 westbound near Busse Road were closed. At around 5:34 p.m., all lanes were closed for the investigation. All lanes were reopened at around 6:33 p.m.
