Elk Grove Township Moves Forward with Consolidation Plan

Residents approved final steps to bring operations to one location, in an effort to streamline services, improve government efficiency.

Arlington Heights, IL. On Tuesday, April 11, 2017, Elk Grove Township residents approved the two final steps to allow the Township to move forward with its consolidation plans. Residents who attended the Elk Grove Township annual Town Hall meeting approved the sale of the Township’s Youth and Family Services building at 401 W. Golf Road in Mount Prospect, and also allowed the Township to purchase an alternate property to bring all of its services into one building.

Currently, Elk Grove Township owns three properties; the Youth and Family Services building, its headquarters at 2400 S. Arlington Heights Road in Arlington Heights, and a property at 711 Chelmsford Lane in Elk Grove Village. Per Illinois code, voter approval is required for the Township to sell or purchase any property.

The goal for consolidation was initially proposed by Elk Grove Township Supervisor Mike Sweeney, who believes Township residents deserve for their elected officials to constantly evaluate operations in regards to efficiency of tax dollars, and all other resources. This reasoning is why a resolution was also proposed, and passed at the April 11 meeting, that ensures the Township will not expend more than the total amount derived from the sale of the three properties, for a new location.

“When we conducted a real estate study in 2016, it determined the Township owns a substantial amount of space we do not need,” Sweeney said. “Across the three properties, we have 10 acres of land, and 36,000 square feet of space. This study determined we need just three acres of land, and 15,000 square feet of space, so the idea to consolidate our operations just makes sense.”

In late January, Elk Grove Township voters approved the sale of the Township headquarters along with the property at 711 Chelmsford Lane. The Township-subsidized daycare center located at the Chelmsford property will continue to operate there until March 31, 2018 or when the property is sold, whichever is later. Sweeney said Township parents who currently utilize the daycare center will be offered vouchers so that they are able to find an alternate daycare facility, if they choose to. He added the Township has also offered to assist the daycare operators to find another facility to operate within.
