ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — The Cypress Area Public Improvements project, which addresses flooding problems within the neighborhood roughly bordered by West Noyes St., West Magnolia St., South Arlington Heights Road and South Ridge Ave., is underway. The project involves three phases, including stormwater improvements, water main replacement and roadway construction, according to village officials.

As of late June, installation of the storm sewers within the area is nearly complete and about half of the water main lining has been installed, which will increase the life of the aging water mains. After the storm sewers are installed, the detention pond excavation, which is about half completed, will progress at a faster pace, according to the village of Arlington Heights.

Street work in the area will also begin with the removal and replacement of sections of curb, gutter and sidewalk. This concrete work will be followed by the excavation of roadway and conclude with asphalt replacement and parkway restoration.

The $7.1 million project has been identified as one of the village’s top flood control projects that resulted from comprehensive flood control studies done several years ago. These projects were prioritized based on funding availability and the number of homes and businesses positively affected by the completed work, according to village officials.

When the stormwater improvements, water main replacement and roadway construction are completed, the project will help reduce street and surface flooding in the flood-prone area. The project includes enlarging the detention basin located at West Cypress and South Arlington Heights Road and installing larger diameter storm water pipes in select portions of the area to convey greater quantities of storm water to the basin.

During construction, the village will also use trenchless technology to line 11,000 linear feet of aging water mains located within backyard easements and certain roads of the project area. This technology to line the water mains is called “cured in place lining.”

Sections of roads in the project area that have been scheduled for reconstruction or resurfacing as part of the village’s annual road maintenance program are being done as part of the Cypress Area Storm Improvements Project.
